Volunteer River Herring Monitoring at Beaver Dam Brook and Manomet Brook
Volunteers needed for Herring Counts in 2026!
To read more about the Herring Count project please check out the Tidmarsh Herring Count Project (massaudubon.org).
Volunteers learning how to conduct a count.
Can we count on your help this year? Volunteer training begins soon!
We are once again partnering with Manomet Library to offer an in-person comprehensive training in addition to our usual virtual/field trainings. We recommend the library training for any new volunteers or volunteers who have not been able to conduct counts the past few years.
You will need to attend one in-person training (not all three) and the online training. The online training will be recorded for volunteers who cannot attend the live, virtual session. *Note: If you are a returning volunteer from last year, you do not have to attend two trainings; but rather choose one training as a refresher.*
If you are interested in this or any other opportunity, Mass Audubon Volunteers can now sign-up, search for volunteer opportunities, register for shifts or events, record hours, and stay in touch, all through our new Mass Audubon Volunteer Portal: https://volunteer.massaudubon.org
Once on the site, you will be asked to create an account with your name, email address, and emergency contact information. From here, you will be able to sign up for the Herring Count Trainings. Once you are officially trained, we will send you a private volunteer link to sign up for Herring Count shifts!
The trainings will be led by Sara Grady, Ph.D., Senior Coastal Ecologist for Mass Audubon. This project at Tidmarsh Wildlife Sanctuary is a collaboration between Mass Audubon Southeast, Living Observatory, Mass Bays, North and South Rivers Watershed Alliance, Responsive Environments Group at the MIT Media Lab, and the Town of Plymouth.
