Growing Atlantic White Cedars for Wetland Restoration Sites

Upper coonamessett awc plantings

Pat Ferrar and I visited Upper Coonamesset to measure the trees we planted last year.

Adrian's Notes:
Notes block 1 very dry. Block 2 looks healthier overall. Block 3 was the wettest, some trees trees are sitting in saturated soils or 1" standing water. Rodent guards act like a greenhouse for the small trees, leaves are greener inside. Trees grew last year and produced seed (see Pat's Note). The interfluve planted trees look good, we should tag some control trees planted by interfluve as control trees.

Notes from Pat Ferrar:
Adrian and I went to the Upper CR yesterday. For all the trees in Blocks 1 and 2, we measured diameters and heights, assessed condition, and looked for cones (which many of the older trees had). They grew at least a few millimeters in diameter on average and there were few mortalities. Block 1 seemed drier and more stressed than Block 2, which looked good. We also walked Blocks 3 and 4. Although none of the trees were fully dead, many seemed very stressed and nearly dead from regular inundation. I figured I would make a plan to get back there and do measurements and assessments for Blocks 3 and 4 with Adrian or Francesca soon. All the older trees have been in there since May 27 of last year, so they've gone through most of a growing season.
