Growing Atlantic White Cedars for Wetland Restoration Sites
LO is preparing to supply AWC trees to Marston Mills and Century Bog projects
On April 27, Glorianna and Adrian inventoried AWC trees at the LO nursery. The trees in the greenhouse were already in the growth stage. Trees that had wintered over outside were still relatively dormant.
Discussions between LO and Zee Crocker about the potential for an experimental planting at the Marston Mills Restoration site has been on going since 2024. In January LO applied for funding thrrough the MA Dept of Fish and Game Community Biodiversity Grant FY2026. While this grant was not awarded, DER found additional funding that will support the AWC planting effort on the CSA site. In May the design for the Comprehensive Study Area came into sharper focus. To locate the LO plantings, the design team has to consider the likely depth of ground water. In other work, LO is suggesting 10 cm plus or minus 5 cm below the soil surface is the sweet spot. The design for the CSA area has to be finalized by June 30th. The design team and LO will be walking the site on June 9th to advance the overall design and the planting plan.
Experimental planting have also been designated for the Century Bog site. It is a little early to determine ground water depths at the proposed locations.
