Volunteer River Herring Monitoring at Beaver Dam Brook and Manomet Brook

Tidmarsh Herring Count Project Trainings

Fish counting for 2023 will begin soon. Sign up for a training session.

Herring counts in Massachusetts usually begin on April 1. However, sometimes they start a week earlier. Sign up for a training in March and you will be registered and able to start at; the start date.

All volunteers counting fish at the Mass Audubon Tidmarsh Wildlife Sanctuary need to attend a training session. Trainings will occur virtually on Mar 9 at 6:30 PM; and in person, on March 12 at 4:30 PM, and March 14 at 10 AM.

Sara Grady stands at one location that volunteers can use to count herring at the Tidmarsh 2 site.

The time commitment required for volunteer counters at Tidmarsh is about 1 hour once a week. Volunteers count for 10 minutes at 2 locations on the sanctuary on a scheduled day of the week and in a scheduled time window, for the length of the season. To register for trainings and the fish count please email Ruth Potter, Regional Operations Manager sevols@massaudubon.or
