Removal of the headwaters dam

Pre-restoration

A massive earthen berm separated the man-made reservoir from the cranberry bogs

Pre-restoration a concrete spillway orchestrated the water flow from the reservoir into Beaver Dam Brook

Construction of the new stream channel and removal of the 1923 dam

In January 2016, SumCo completed the construction of a new sinuous channel that would serve to connect the headwaters to the main stem of Beaver Dam Brook. Most of the earthen berm was then removed, and in February the two concrete spillways constructed in 1923 were dramatically removed by dualing excavators. Stepping stones were added to the stream channel in March. They allowed us to cross the stream channel with dry feet for a few years but over time it became dangerous to use them as they sunk below the surface flow and vegetation grew up along the bank.

In February 2016, two Sum Co excavators worked to take out the concrete spillway at Tidmarsh
