Let Nature do the work (to form channels)

Alex observed at Windswept Bogs in June 2025, and loves insights from NCF, Fuss & O'Neill (designers), and Sumco (Travis) about letting water find its way across the former bog surface without significant channel construction or stabilization. If we create conditions on the ground, and give the site time, then natural channel development will occur. This thinking aligns with the position of restoration ecology papers like this one: Design Criteria for Process-Based Restoration of Fluvial Systems. Such approaches may also help reduce cost and C emissions. Such an approach is not always be possible if fish passage is an immediate goal/need but is worth considering broadly.
